Volunteer Ushering Take a virtual tour
The Herbst Theatre has an open volunteer ushering policy, with the exception of SFJAZZ shows and celebrity events (see note below). You do not need to call or sign up in advance.
You may volunteer to usher for any Herbst Theatre performance if you arrive 90 minutes prior to curtain time with a small working flashlight and you are appropriately attired.
Appropriate volunteer usher attire is black and white, or navy blue and white, business attire. Business attire includes a suit with shirt and necktie, a pantsuit, a dress or skirt with blouse, and other culturally appropriate dress wear.
To volunteer, arrive appropriately attired at the door to the left of the Box Office in the Veterans Building lobby 90 minutes prior to curtain time (for example, you must arrive at 6:30 pm for an 8:00 pm performance).
If you are not on time, wearing proper clothing and carrying a working flashlight, you may not usher.
Note that for celebrity events, only ushers who volunteer on a regular basis may participate.
Please also note this policy does not apply to SFJAZZ performances, as SFJAZZ provides their own volunteer ushers. For more information, please visit the SFJAZZ website.
For information regarding ushering at the War Memorial Opera House, please send an email with your name, phone number and a brief account of your interest in ushering to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
You may obtain information about the volunteer ushering policy and available ushering dates in Davies Symphony Hall by calling the House Manager’s phone line at 415.503.5325.
Each Monday the House Manager’s voice mail greeting is updated to list currently available ushering dates and instructions. Please do not request dates by phone.
